Dermatologist Recommended Skin Care Routine for Rosacea

I have developed many rosacea skin care routines and have rosacea myself. Here are tips to figuring out what to use in a rosacea skincare regimen.

When you are building a rosacea routine, keep these tips in mind:

ALL barriers to skin health need to be treated to calm rosacea.

Always shop for products using your Baumann Skin Type because you may have issues such as an impaired skin barrier that is making your rosacea worse.

What should you not use on your face when you have rosacea?

When you have rosacea, these are the skin care products to avoid:

  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Chemicals sunscreens
  • Hydroxyacids, AHAs
  • low pH ingredients
  • Vitamin C serums
  • Facial scrubs
  • Facial brushes
  • Strongly perfumed products

Don't use exfoliants until your rosacea has calmed down.

The only exfoliating ingredient that is safe to use in rosacea is the BHA salicylic acid because it has soothing abilities.

The only low pH ingredients that are OK to use with rosacea are azelaic acid and salicylic acid. Avoid other acids including ascorbic acid.

Retinoids can be used after 1-2 months of a soothing skin care routine if you are not experiencing any skin stinging.

Start with a low dose when beginning retinoids.

Is Hyaluronic acid Ok for rosacea?

HA serums are OK to use when you have rosacea, however they are not the best choice.

HA serums hydrate temporarily.

They make other ingredients penetrate more so can increase side effects of other products.

They have no soothing abilities.

They are expensive and do not help rosacea- however they will not hurt rosacea prone skin.

Is Vitamin C Serum good for rosacea?

Do not use Vitamin C serum if you have rosacea.

Vitamin C must be a low pH of 2-2.5 to penetrate into the skin. This low pH will irritate rosace, cause facial flushing, and make the skin sting.

Vitamin C moisturizers and creams do not sting the skin, but the fact that the pH is not low means they are useless anyway so do not waste money on these.

Niacinamide is a better choice to treat rosacea than Vitamin C.

Should I use a toner if I have rosacea?

Most toners should be avoided when you have rosacea because they have alcohol which can irritate the skin.

Toners should only be use din rosacea if you have oily skin and if they have soothing ingredients like:

  • Chamomile
  • Green tea
  • Fever few
  • Licorice extract

Should people with rosacea use retinol?

You should not use retinol when beginning a rosacea skin care routine. Once you have used a soothing skin care routine for 4- 8 weeks you can consider beginning a low strength retinol.

When you have rosacea , only use retinol if you don't have:

  • Stinging
  • Scaling
  • Dryness
  • Uncomfortable skin
  • Painful skin

How Do I Moisturize with Rosacea?

When to use rosacea serums and creams with prescription rosacea medications in your skin care routine

They may be used in conjunction with prescription rosacea medications.

If you combine your rosacea prescription medication with cosmeceutical anti-redness skin care products, this is when to use them in your skin care routine:

If you use a prescription rosacea cream or serum, apply the prescription medication first, followed by a soothing occlusive moisturizer like Zerafite Soothing and Calming Moisturizer

Use the rosacea prescription medication in step 3 am and step 3 pm of your skin care regimen

Why Do People With Rosacea Need a Special Skin Care Routine?

People with rosacea need a special rosacea routine for a few reasons:

There are many rosacea-friendly skin products, but the best rosacea routine is about finding a process you can follow daily to help your skin heal.

While everyone’s routine is different, your basic skin care routine for rosacea will include these steps every morning and night:

  • Apply a rosacea-safe Rosacea Cleanser that is right for your Baumann Skin Type® to your face with gentle circular motions, using your fingertips.
  • Thoroughly and gently rinse off the cleanser using your fingertips and lukewarm water.
  • Use a clean and dry cotton towel to gently pat your face dry.
  • Soothe your skin with moisturizer.
  • Apply a gentle eye cream to treat the redness and stinging rosacea can cause to the fragile eye area.
  • Depending on your skin type, apply a rosacea treatment.

In the mornings, you’ll want to add SPF to your routine to prevent sunburn. The best option is a physical or mineral SPF, and one with a tint can help camouflage redness. At night, add removing your sunscreen or your makeup to your routine. Avoid makeup removal wipes and stronger removers. Look for a gentle cream and use very gentle circular motions to remove any trace of product from your skin before you move on to cleansing and the rest of your rosacea routine.

How to Get Rid of Rosacea Naturally?

Mild rosacea might improve with the right skin care products, weight loss, and a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables. The best skin care products should have anti-inflammatory ingredients such as argan oil and aloe vera.

This is our favorite natural organic Argan oil:

PAORR 100% Argan Oil

Whether you want to use natural skin care products or not, the most important thing is that you use the correct skin care products and skin care routine for your Baumann Skin Type. Using the wrong products causes inflammation which worsens rosacea.

Finding the right products to treat rosacea all begins with shopping by your Baumann Skin Type.

How to get rid of rosacea permanently:

  1. Eat a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables and minimal sugar
  2. Meditate or do stress relieving activities
  3. Try and achieve your ideal weight which will decrease general inflammation. I have seen patients clear from weight loss alone!
  4. Take the quiz and diagnose your Baumann Skin Type
  5. Try the recommended products for 8 weeks and see if skin is beginning to improve.
  6. If not improved, see a dermatologist to make sure you really have rosacea
  7. Ask dermatologist about prescription medications.
  8. If these do not work, talk to your dermatologist about vascular laser treatments

Hitting rosacea from all angles early is the best way to get rid of rosacea permanently.

Rosacea skin care routines should consider your lifestyle habits, rosacea severity and other barriers to skin health. For example, if your skin is dehydrated it will be very difficult to clear up rosacea because dehydration leads to inflammation. Once you have a personalized skin care routine for rosacea- use it every single day as prescribed. It is the everyday consistency of soothing cosmeceutical ingredients that improves rosacea.

How long does it take a rosacea skin care routine to work?

Follow your routine every single day for the fastest results.

Be patient. It may take 4-12 weeks to see results – so stick with it.

It is not easy to get rid of inflammation- so target redness from all angles at once with a complete anti-redness skin care routine.

Rosacea is progressive, and it is very difficult to get rid of moderate and severe rosacea, so don't wait until it is too late!

If your rosacea is not improved at all in 8 weeks, see your dermatologist for a prescription rosacea medication or a rosacea treatment like the vascular laser or intense pulsed light.
