ORPW skin is Oily, Resistant, Pigmented and Wrinkle-Prone. As a dermatologist, I like treating ORPW skin because it can usually tolerate strong retinoids, skin-lightening ingredients and other treatment products without developing the irritation that limits treatment in Sensitive skin types. When the correct products are combined in the right routine, ORPW skin can often show a noticeable improvement in dark spots, uneven skin tone, texture and signs of skin aging within 8–12 weeks.
Because ORPW skin is Oily, it already produces plenty of its own sebum. Sebum provides natural occlusive lipids, so ORPW skin generally does not need heavy, lipid-rich barrier-repair moisturizers. These can make the skin feel sticky or greasy and may contribute to clogged pores. If additional hydration is needed, lightweight products containing humectants are usually a better choice.
ORPW skin typically does well with a foaming cleanser that removes excess sebum and leaves the skin feeling clean. Depending on the routine, exfoliating cleansers containing ingredients such as salicylic acid or hydroxy acids may also help improve clogged pores, pigmentation and skin texture.
The biggest advantage of the R for Resistant is the ability to use more powerful treatment ingredients. Strong skin lighteners can target dark spots and uneven pigmentation, while retinoids can improve skin texture and signs of aging. Retinoid strength can often be increased more rapidly than it can in Sensitive skin types as tolerance develops.
One of the most difficult products for ORPW and other Oily Baumann Skin Types to find is a daily sunscreen that does not feel greasy and does not clog pores. Daily sun protection is especially important for ORPW because UV exposure contributes to both pigmentation and skin aging.
ORPW is a good example of why knowing only that skin is “oily” or has “dark spots” is not enough to choose skincare. The complete ORPW routine should simultaneously control excess oil, prevent clogged pores, treat pigmentation and address skin aging while taking advantage of the skin's ability to tolerate stronger active ingredients.
