Hyaluronic Acid Serum Skin Benefits

Woman with dark skin enjoying hydrating and glowing benefits of HA serum

Hyaluronic Acid serum has many benefits for your skin.  However, HA Serums do not benefit every skin type.  In fact, HA serums can increase the side effects of retinoids and other skin care products.

Before spending money on a HA serum, you should first make sure it is the best choice for your skin type. Is HA worth it?  We can help you find out. First you need to know your Baumann Skin Type.

Hyaluronic Acid Benefits

HA serums have many benefits which is why many consider them to be the best antiaging serum. However, HA is not a true antiaging skin care product.  Rather, HA is a moisturizing skin care ingredient.

HA is also used as a penetration enhancer to make other skin care ingredients penetrate into the skin better. This is why HA will dramatically affect the benefits and side effects of other skin care ingredients in the skin care routine.  You must carefully choose skin care products in your skin care routine to make sure they all work well together.  HA is one ingredient that is important because it affects other ingredients.

Hyaluronic Acid Benefits Skin Through Hydration

HA serums are humectants that bind water and hold it to the surface of your skin.

In a humid environment, this can plump up your skin, making it firm and erasing fine lines and wrinkles.  This improvement is temporary.

In a dry environment, HA can actually pull water from your skin leading to dehydration, rough skin and fine lines.  You should always use HA with an occlusive moisturizer in a dry environment to prevent this from happening.

Hyaluronic Acid is Not A Good Antiaging Skin Care Ingredient When Used Topical Skin Care Products Such as Serums and Creams

It is a myth that hyaluronic acid is good anti-aging ingredient when used topically in skin care products. HA works as a humectant moisturizing ingredient which makes it seem to have instant antiaging benefits.

HA rapidly corrects fine lines and wrinkles by plumping them with water. This is temporary and is not a permanent change.

HA is antiaging when injected into the skin as a dermal filler.   Crosslinked hyaluronic acid that is injected into the skin such as Restylane and Juvederm dermal fillers, can last in the skin for years.  This is due to the stabilization of the HA by crosslinkers that are not found in skin care products with HA.

HA  is a glycosaminoglycan which can have antiaging effects on the extracellular matrix, but it needs to get into the skin and stay in the skin to have beneficial effects.  At this time, topical HA products don't have much long term antiaging benefit.

How HA Works on the Skin Depends On How Long the HA Chain Is

The length of the HA chain corresponds with it's molecular weight.  Many HA serums contain a mixture of different molecular weights of HA.  For example, SkinMedica HA5 contains 5 different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid chains which explains why it is named HA 5 Rejuvenating Hydrator Serum.

High molecule weight chains of HA stay on the skin's surface, drawing water to the surface.

Short strands of HA, known as low molecular weight HA, can penetrate into skin, hydrating the inner layers of the epidermis and contributing to the extracellular matrix.

Low, medium and high molecular weight HA chains in skin care products are broken down in 24 hours and do not have any long lasting antiaging effect.  This is because they are not crosslinked like the HA in dermal fillers are.  It is the crosslinking in HA that gives it duration in the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid Serums Affect The Benefits of Acne, Melasma, Rosacea and Antiaging Products

HA serums alter how much water is in and on the skin and how other ingredients penetrate and react with the skin.  This can make retinoids and acne medications work better, but also can increase side effects.  Skin lightening and anti-inflammatory products may work better when combined with a HA serum.

HA serums do not have any long term antiaging benefit when applied topically to the skin. ( at least none of the current products on the market have long term antiaging effects.)  This means that there are better antiaging ingredients for your skin type. How Long Does it Take Hyaluronic Acid to Work on Skin ?

HA effects are rapid when used in a humid environment.  Within 30 minutes the fine lines will plump up and improve.  In a dry environment, you may not see any improvement of wrinkles.

How Long Do HA Serum Benefits Last?

Improvement of skin glow and fine lines and wrinkles is due to skin hydration and is only temporary.  As soon as the hyaluronic acid serum is washed off, the skin benefits disappear within a few hours.
