Acne Skin Care Routine

Acne Skin Care Routine

Acne should be treated with a skin care routine personalized for your skin type. Acne is an inflammatory condition of the hair follicle. Acne is an 8 week cycle, so the acne skin care routine that you start today will need 8 weeks to work. Acne treatments should be used consistently to prevent acne. Acne is considered Type 1 Sensitive Skin and can coexist with other types of sensitive skin. The key to treating acne is killing the acne-causing bacteria, clearing pores and calming inflammation.

What causes Acne?

Acne is caused by Cutibacterium acnes.  This bothersome acne bacteria causes acne by:

  • Binding the toll-like receptors that turn on inflammation

  • Inducing antimicrobial peptides
  • Causing secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines
  • Disrupting exfoliation of skin cells
  • Stimulating the sebaceous glands

What Kills Acne Bacteria?

There are two ways to get rid of acne bacteria:

  • Make the skin unattractive to acne bacteria

  • Increase good bacteria on the skin

  • Lower the skin’s pH

  • Reduce sebum production

  • Change lipids in  the sebum

  • Use ingredients like silver

  • Clear pores

  • Kill the bacteria that causes acne by using

  • Antibiotics

  • Benzoyl peroxide

  • Blue Light

  • Monolaurin

  • Silver

What is the Best Skin Care Routine for Acne?

Use a non comedogenic skin lightener to treat dark spots that you get from acne.  Dark spots are most common in brown and black skin. You can use either a vitamin C serum or a hyperpigmentation cream. You must know your skin type to properly pair your acne treatment cleanser with a non comedogenic moisturizer, non comedogenic sunscreen, acne toner, or acne cream.  The exact products cannot be recommended until you take the skin type quiz.  Once you know your Baumann Skin Type® we can recommend a personalized skin care routine for acne.

How Long Will My Acne Skin Care Routine Take To Work?

If you are on a personalized skin care routine for acne that has been customized for your skin type and lifestyle factors- and you use it in the proper skin care routine step order every day as prescribed- you should begin to see results in 8 weeks.  In some cases, you will experience purging of the skin, which is acne that was below the skin’s surface coming to the top layers of the skin.  This skin purging will happen the first 4 weeks of acne treatment. It will be much easier once you make it through the first month.  Do not stop using your skin care products if your skin begins to purge the acne.  It will only slow down your progress.

Acne is a type of sensitive skin that requires a customized skin care routine for acne to get clear, smooth and blemish free skin. Take the skin type quiz to find the skin care brands and skin care routine that is best for your acne skin type.
