Baumann Skin Type 1: DSPT

DSPT: Dry, Sensitive, Pigmented, and Tight

The DSPT Skin Type is Dry, Sensitive, Pigmented, and Tight, with three barriers to skin health: dehydration, inflammation, and pigmentation.

While dry, sensitive skin can require extra care, DSPT skin types can be on the road to healthier, happier skin with a skincare routine that includes the right moisturizers and skin-soothing ingredients.

What Are the Benefits of Having the DSPT Skin Type?

DSPT skin types are either under 30 or are older and have a long history of practicing good lifestyle habits like staying out of the sun and tanning beds and wearing daily sunscreen. This is what gives DSPT skin its “tight” characteristic, meaning that your skin is not prone to wrinkles.

Keep up these good sun protection habits, as well as managing stress, eating a healthy diet, and not smoking, to maintain your smooth, wrinkle-free skin.

What Are the Cons of Having the DSPT Skin Type?

Dehydration

Like other dry skin types, DSPT skin has an impaired skin barrier. This allows moisture to escape from the skin into the atmosphere, and also allows irritants and allergens to easily reach your skin.

A barrier repair cream is the best way to repair an impaired skin barrier and restore healthy hydration and protection to your skin.

Inflammation

DSPT skin is also sensitive, or prone to inflammation. Inflammation is the root cause or contributor to a variety of skin problems, including acne, eczema, and rosacea. Because of this, DSPT skin types often struggle with acne breakouts, redness, and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Barrier repair creams with anti-inflammatory ingredients are the perfect moisturizer for Baumann Skin Type 1 Skin Types. Keep reading to see our favorites.

Uneven Pigmentation

Finally, DSPT skin types often struggle with uneven skin tone. Inflammation increases the risk of uneven skin tone caused by hyperpigmentation by activating cells called melanocytes to produce more of the pigment melanin. Thus, skin-soothing ingredients that calm inflammation can help to reduce pigmentation concerns.

Skin-brightening ingredients like vitamin C and kojic acid can be used to treat existing dark spots.

Some of the best types of skin lighteners are tyrosinase inhibitors, PAR-2 blockers, or exfoliate dark spots from the skin's surface.

Eczema

DSPT skin types are more likely to get eczema- especially if they use heavily fragrances products, soap or harsh detergents.

What Are the Worst Skincare Ingredients for DSPT Skin?

DSPT skin types should avoid ingredients that can dry the skin further or that can trigger inflammation and pigmentation. Ingredients to avoid include:

Alcohols

Anionic surfactants

Anything causing allergy

Benzoyl peroxide

Dimethyl dodecyl amido betaine

Hard water (increased calcium)

Isopropyl myristate

Lauryl sulphates

What Types of Products Should DSPT Skin Types Use?

Best Cleansers for DSPT

DSPT skin types should use a moisturizing, non-foaming cleanser` to gently remove dirt, oil, and makeup without causing dryness or irritation. These are the best cleansers for DSPT Baumann Skin Types:

Consider using filtered water or cleansing water when rinsing your face if you are prone to redness and irritation. Studies show that very sensitive skin gets worse when cleansers are rinsed off with hard water like the water found in NYC. The Calcium and Magnesium in the water are irritating to sensitive skin types.

Barrier repair moisturizers for DSPT

Best Moisturizers for DSPT

A barrier repair moisturizer is important to repair the damaged skin barrier and rehydrate your skin.

Look for soothing barrier repair moisturizers that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients like argan oil, niacinamide, and feverfew to help calm inflammation and better manage acne, eczema, and other skin conditions. Antioxidant ingredients like vitamin C, resveratrol, and polyphenols offer protection from damage caused by free radicals, making these ingredients good choices for DSPT skin.

Best Sunscreen for DSPT

All skin types, including DSPT, should always wear a daily sunscreen. DSPT skin types generally prefer moisturizing tinted sunscreens like these:

Best retinoids for DSPT

While retinoids can help DSPTs with acne, these ingredients need to be introduced to sensitive skin slowly and gradually and should be applied on top of a barrier repair moisturizer at first. When beginning a retinoid, follow the instructions at this link. Do not use a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid (HA) when starting retinoids, as HA increases the penetration of treatment ingredients and can therefore worsen side effects until your skin has had a chance to adapt to your new retinoid regimen.

There are our favorite low strength retinols for you to start with:

What Types of Products Should DSPT Skin Types Avoid?

DSPT skin types should avoid using foaming cleansers, as these strip away the skin’s natural oils and cause dryness and flaking.

Also avoid washing the face with very hot water.

One common ingredient to avoid when you have dry skin is salicylic acid. This ingredient is fat soluble, meaning it strips oils from the skin, which is not a good thing if your skin is already naturally dry. If you are looking for an at home exfoliant or an in clinic chemical peel, glycolic acid is a much safer choice for dry skin types.

Glycolic acid is soluble in water, and does not strip oil from the face.

What Cosmetic Procedures are Good for DSPT Skin Types?

DSPT skin types who struggle with acne can be good candidates for a chemical peel that uses glycolic acid and skin skin-brightening ingredients. Glycolic acid is a type of chemical exfoliant that removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, dirt, and debris from your skin without using harsh, abrasive physical exfoliation that could make irritation and acne worse.

DSPT skin types with rosacea may benefit from vascular lasers or red light therapy to treat redness and visible blood vessels.

DSPT (Dry, Sensitive, Pigmented and Tight) Skin Type

Though DSPT skin can require some extra attention at times, the proper skincare regimen that contains a barrier repair moisturizer, anti-inflammatory ingredients, and skin-brightening ingredients can repair all three barriers to skin health to calm, soothe, hydrate and even out the tone of DSPT skin.

Congratulations on finding your Baumann Skin Type!
