More about skin type DRNW
DRNW skin is Dry, Resistant, Non-Pigmented and Wrinkle-Prone.
This is one of the easier Baumann Skin Types to manage because the skin is Resistant and can usually tolerate stronger treatment products and active ingredients. DRNW skin is less likely to have problems with inflammation, stinging, acne, rosacea or skin allergies. It also does not have hyperpigmentation as a major concern, so the routine can focus primarily on dryness, barrier repair and prevention and treatment of skin aging.
The first priority is hydration and barrier repair. DRNW moisturizers should contain humectants to attract and hold water, occlusive ingredients to decrease transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and barrier-repair lipids such as ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol. These ingredients help dry skin look smoother, plumper and more hydrated while strengthening the skin barrier.
Because DRNW skin is Resistant, it can usually tolerate stronger anti-aging ingredients than Sensitive skin types. Retinoids are especially important for DRNW skin and are usually well tolerated when introduced properly. Other anti-aging ingredients can be added depending on the individual needs of the skin.
The best anti-aging ingredients for DRNW skin depend on more than the four-letter skin type. Age, gender, amount of sun exposure and diet can all influence which anti-aging ingredients should be included in the routine. For example, someone with significant sun exposure may need a different antioxidant strategy than someone with minimal sun exposure, while a person who eats large amounts of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables may have different skincare needs than someone whose diet contains fewer antioxidants.
This is why two people with DRNW skin may not receive exactly the same products. Your Baumann Skin Type identifies the major barriers to skin health, while your age, lifestyle, sun exposure, diet and other habits help determine which anti-aging products are best for you.
What should a DRNW skincare routine focus on?
DRNW skin can devote most of the routine to hydration, barrier repair and anti-aging. Because DRNW skin is Resistant, it usually does not need to use valuable steps in the routine for soothing or anti-inflammatory ingredients. Because it is Non-Pigmented, it also does not need skin-lightening ingredients to treat dark spots.
This leaves more room in the routine for retinoids, antioxidants, peptides, growth factors, exosomes, DNA-repair ingredients and other anti-aging technologies. The moisturizer should provide humectants and occlusives for hydration as well as barrier-repair lipids for dryness.
What is the best anti-aging serum for DRNW skin?
There is no single best anti-aging serum for every DRNW because the best choice depends on age, gender, hormone status, sun exposure, diet and other lifestyle habits.
For postmenopausal women who are not using hormone replacement therapy, Emepelle products containing MEP Technology may be considered because they are designed to address estrogen-deficient skin. This would not be an appropriate reason to choose Emepelle for men.
If you have had significant sun exposure, products that support repair of accumulated UV damage are particularly useful. ISDIN Eryfotona Night contains Night Repairsomes®, including Micrococcus lysate, and is designed to help address accumulated sun damage overnight.
If you are over 50, a longevity serum such as ReQ Longevity Face Serum may be considered as part of an anti-aging strategy aimed at improving the function of aging skin cells.
( plated ) INTENSE Serum is another anti-aging option. It contains more than one trillion platelet-derived exosomes and targets multiple visible signs of skin aging. The manufacturer currently recommends using INTENSE once daily.
One advantage of DRNW skin is that there are relatively few competing skin problems to treat. Because the skin is Resistant and does not require treatment for hyperpigmentation, you have many more options for filling the anti-aging steps in your routine. Different anti-aging serums can be used in the morning and evening or alternated on different days.
Can DRNW skin use retinoids and other strong anti-aging ingredients?
Usually, yes. The R in DRNW stands for Resistant, which means these skin types are generally less prone to stinging, redness and inflammation than Sensitive skin types. This often makes it easier to tolerate retinoids and other potent anti-aging ingredients.
The D still matters, however. DRNW skin is Dry, so strong anti-aging products should be paired with a moisturizer that both repairs the skin barrier and helps treat skin aging.
One of my favorite choices for DRNW skin is Zerafite Wrinkle Defense Barrier Cream. It uses advanced barrier-repair technology from South Korea while also containing anti-aging ingredients such as Crepidiastrum Denticulatum Leaf/Stem Extract, Heptasodium Hexacarboxymethyl Dipeptide-12 and Saururus Chinensis Extract that target pathways involved in skin aging, including cellular senescence and the appearance of wrinkles. It also contains multiple naturally derived hydrating oils and emollients that help dry skin hold onto water and reduce moisture loss.
This combination is particularly useful for DRNW skin because the moisturizer can repair the Dry skin barrier while leaving more of the routine available for powerful anti-aging treatments.
Why might two people with DRNW skin need different anti-aging routines?
The four-letter Baumann Skin Type tells us the major problems we need to address, but it does not tell us everything about how your skin is aging. Age, gender, menopause and hormone status, cumulative sun exposure, diet and other habits can change which anti-aging ingredients deserve a place in your routine.
For example, a postmenopausal woman may have different needs from a man of the same age. Someone with decades of significant sun exposure may benefit from placing greater emphasis on ingredients that address photodamage, while someone with very little sun exposure may have different priorities.
This is why the Baumann Skin Type Quiz asks about more than whether your skin is dry, oily, sensitive or pigmented. Your answers help determine which anti-aging technologies should occupy the limited spaces in your skincare routine.
