More about skin type OSNW
OSNW skin is Oily, Sensitive, Non-Pigmented and Wrinkle-Prone. Of these four characteristics, the S for Sensitive has the greatest influence on which treatment products should be used because sensitivity can make it harder to tolerate many of the most effective anti-aging ingredients.
OSNW skin may have acne, rosacea, skin stinging or skin allergies, or a combination of these sensitivity subtypes. Each requires a different approach. For example, an ingredient that is useful for acne may be too irritating for someone with rosacea or stinging. The sensitivity subtype also affects how quickly ingredients such as retinoids, exfoliating acids and other anti-aging treatments can be introduced and how often they should be used.
This makes OSNW more challenging to treat than an Oily, Resistant, Wrinkle-Prone skin type. Although OSNW skin needs anti-aging ingredients because it is Wrinkle-Prone, using them too aggressively can trigger redness, stinging, breakouts or inflammation. The goal is to calm and control sensitivity while gradually adding anti-aging treatments that the skin can tolerate.
This is why it is best to follow the recommendations in the personalized Skin Type Solutions skincare routine created from the answers to the Baumann Skin Type Quiz. The routine takes the sensitivity subtype into account when choosing products and can be found in your Skin Type Solutions profile.
OSNW skin also produces plenty of its own sebum. Sebum provides natural occlusive lipids that help decrease water evaporation, so OSNW skin usually does not need heavy, lipid-rich barrier-repair moisturizers. Heavy moisturizers designed for Dry skin types can make OSNW skin feel sticky or greasy and may contribute to clogged pores.
When additional hydration is needed, OSNW skin generally does better with lightweight, noncomedogenic products containing humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid rather than heavy creams containing large amounts of oils, butters and occlusive lipids.
A foaming cleanser is usually a good choice because it removes excess sebum and gives Oily skin the clean feeling it prefers. However, cleanser choice should also take the sensitivity subtype into account, especially when acne, rosacea or stinging is present.
Because OSNW skin is Non-Pigmented, skin-lightening ingredients are generally unnecessary. This leaves more room in the routine for products that address sensitivity and skin aging rather than spending valuable treatment steps on a problem this skin type does not have.
Daily sunscreen is especially important because OSNW skin is Wrinkle-Prone. Look for a lightweight, noncomedogenic sunscreen that does not feel greasy and is comfortable enough to wear every day.
OSNW demonstrates why choosing skincare based only on “oily,” “sensitive” or “aging” skin is not enough. OSNW needs a different combination of cleanser, moisturizer, anti-aging treatments and sunscreen than other Oily Baumann Skin Types. The sensitivity subtype determines which anti-aging ingredients can be tolerated and how quickly they can be introduced.
What are the best anti-aging products for OSNW skin with rosacea?
OSNW skin with rosacea needs anti-aging products that can improve signs of skin aging without triggering redness, stinging or inflammation. Strong retinoids and exfoliating acids may eventually be useful, but they can be difficult to tolerate when rosacea is active.
Plated INTENSE Serum is a good anti-aging option because its platelet-derived exosome technology targets signs of skin aging without relying on exfoliating acids or retinoids. It can be particularly useful when sensitive skin cannot tolerate more irritating anti-aging ingredients.
Pavise Dynamic Age Defense SPF is another excellent choice for OSNW skin with rosacea because it combines daily mineral sun protection with anti-aging and soothing ingredients. It contains niacinamide, bisabolol and antioxidants, is fragrance-free and has been tested for sensitive and blemish-prone skin. It has a relatively lightweight texture compared with many mineral sunscreens, making it a useful option for Oily skin that does not want a heavy sunscreen.
This combination allows OSNW skin to address skin aging while minimizing unnecessary irritation.
What are the best products for OSNW skin with both acne and rosacea?
When OSNW skin has both acne and rosacea, the routine needs to control clogged pores and acne-causing bacteria without increasing inflammation.
As long as the skin is not stinging and there is not an active inflammatory flare, a salicylic acid cleanser can be a good choice. Salicylic acid is lipophilic, so it can penetrate into oily pores and help remove the excess sebum and dead skin cells that contribute to clogged pores.
Follow cleansing with CLn Hypochlorous Spray. Hypochlorous acid has antimicrobial activity and can help reduce microbes associated with acne without using harsher acne ingredients that may be difficult for rosacea-prone skin to tolerate.
Next, use a soothing, noncomedogenic anti-aging moisturizer, such as Essopi Triple Antioxidant Cream. The goal is to keep inflammation controlled so that the skin can eventually tolerate other anti-aging and acne treatments.
If the skin is actively red, burning or stinging, control the inflammation first before adding stronger acne or anti-aging ingredients.
What sunscreen is best for OSNW skin?
Finding sunscreen can be difficult for OSNW skin because many sunscreens feel heavy or greasy on Oily skin, while others may sting or irritate Sensitive skin.
Look for a lightweight, noncomedogenic broad-spectrum sunscreen that is comfortable enough to wear every day. Because OSNW is Wrinkle-Prone, daily sunscreen is also one of the most important anti-aging products in the routine.
Pavise Dynamic Age Defense SPF is a good example because it combines mineral UV protection with anti-aging ingredients such as niacinamide, astaxanthin, silymarin and Pycnogenol, while also containing soothing ingredients such as bisabolol. It is fragrance-free and has passed both sensitive-skin and comedogenicity testing.
If you have very oily OSNW skin, Pavise Dynamic Age Defense SPF may be all you need after cleansing in the morning. It provides sun protection while also addressing redness, sensitivity and skin aging, so there may be no need to layer a separate moisturizer and multiple anti-aging products underneath it. For very oily OSNW skin, this one product can address essentially everything the skin needs in the morning besides cleansing.
Pavise also makes a gentle amino acid cleanser that can be used to remove the sunscreen at the end of the day. This can make an OSNW routine remarkably simple: cleanse, treat sensitivity and aging, and protect from the sun without unnecessarily layering heavy products on oily skin.
For OSNW skin, the ideal sunscreen should protect against photoaging without making oily skin feel excessively greasy or aggravating sensitive skin. In this skin type, fewer well-chosen products can often be better than a complicated routine.
How can OSNW skin get rid of clogged pores if it cannot tolerate retinoids?
Retinoids are one of the best treatments for clogged pores, but some OSNW skin types initially cannot tolerate them because the S for Sensitive makes the skin more prone to irritation.
Before giving up on retinoids, look at the rest of the skincare routine. Make sure the cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen and makeup do not contain comedogenic ingredients that may be contributing to clogged pores. Heavy moisturizers formulated for Dry skin are often unnecessary for OSNW skin and may make oily, acne-prone skin feel greasy or congested.
The routine should first focus on using the correct cleanser and lightweight, noncomedogenic moisturizer to control acne and calm sensitivity. Once inflammation and sensitivity are controlled, a low-strength retinoid can often be introduced slowly and increased as tolerance improves.
The goal is not simply to add more acne treatments. It is to create a routine that controls clogged pores while making Sensitive skin healthy enough to tolerate the retinoid that can help prevent them long term.
