What is the best sunscreen for young oily skin?
The most important thing is to choose a sunscreen you like enough to use every day and in the correct amount. Apply about 1/4 teaspoon to the entire face to get close to the SPF protection stated on the label. Using too little sunscreen reduces the protection you receive.
For young oily skin, look for a lightweight, noncomedogenic SPF 30 or higher that does not feel greasy or heavy. The sunscreens in this collection were selected because they are lightweight and noncomedogenic, making them good choices for Oily Baumann Skin Types.
If your skin is oily, you can usually use sunscreen instead of a moisturizer in the morning. There is no reason to add another layer if your skin already feels comfortable.
Both mineral and chemical sunscreens can provide effective UV protection. If sunscreens tend to burn or sting your eyes, try a mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. You may also want to avoid chemical sunscreens containing avobenzone, which can cause eye irritation in some people.
Why do I have blackheads on my nose even though I don't have acne?
You can have blackheads even if you do not have acne. Blackheads are open comedones, which form when sebum and dead skin cells containing keratin, a protein made by skin cells, collect inside a pore. Because the pore remains open, the material at the surface is exposed to air and turns dark through oxidation.
The key to treating blackheads is unclogging the pores. Salicylic acid (SA) is especially useful for oily skin because it is lipophilic, or oil-soluble, allowing it to work within oily, clogged pores. Try a salicylic acid exfoliating mask every 2–3 days, but only if you are not using other exfoliating products in your skincare routine.
Do not combine multiple exfoliating masks, scrubs, acids or peel pads. Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier, cause dryness and irritation, and contribute to acne breakouts. ORNT skin is healthy skin, so less is more.
Do I need moisturizer if my skin is already oily?
No. If your skin is oily and does not feel dry, you do not need a moisturizer. Oily skin produces plenty of sebum, which provides natural lipids and helps reduce water loss from the skin.
During the day, it is better to use a lightweight, noncomedogenic sunscreen instead of a moisturizer. This gives your skin the protection it needs without adding another unnecessary layer.
At night, wash your face to remove excess sebum, sunscreen and debris. If your skin feels comfortable afterward and is not dry, you do not need to apply a moisturizer. ORNT skin is healthy skin, and adding products you do not need can make oily skin feel greasy or contribute to clogged pores.
Do I need a niacinamide serum if I have oily skin?
No. ORNT skin does not need a niacinamide serum just because it is oily. Niacinamide is useful in skincare routines designed to address redness and inflammation, hyperpigmentation and signs of skin aging. As an ORNT skin type, you do not have these skin concerns. Your concerns are excess oil and perhaps some blackheads or clogged pores.
Niacinamide can also irritate some people, especially in higher-concentration serums. There is no reason to expose healthy skin to an active ingredient you do not need.
If your skin is clear and healthy, keep your routine simple. Cleanse away excess sebum, use salicylic acid if you need help with clogged pores, and wear sunscreen every day. Do not add ingredients simply because they are popular on social media. With ORNT “Perfect 10 Skin,” less is more.
