Re-Q is a new generation of pro-longevity skincare designed to address aging at the cellular level. Rather than simply stimulating aging skin cells to make more collagen, Re-Q focuses on helping tired or exhausted fibroblasts function more like healthy, younger fibroblasts.
Fibroblasts are important cells in the dermis that produce and maintain collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, and the extracellular matrix (ECM) responsible for skin's strength, firmness, thickness, and resilience. As fibroblasts age, they can become less efficient at cellular repair and collagen production. Some eventually become senescent and may release inflammatory and collagen-degrading signals that contribute to wrinkles, sagging, thinning, and loss of elasticity.
What Makes Re-Q Different?
The key technology in Re-Q is RLX-201 (Dioxothiazetidinyl Demethoxyrapamycin), an innovative longevity ingredient developed to selectively reduce mTORC1 signaling while preserving mTORC2 signaling.
mTORC1 helps regulate whether cells prioritize growth and protein production or cellular maintenance and recycling. In aging fibroblasts, excessive or dysregulated mTORC1 activity may contribute to cellular exhaustion and senescence.
Rather than continuously telling an aging fibroblast to work harder, RLX-201 is designed to temporarily reduce mTORC1 activity—essentially giving exhausted fibroblasts an opportunity to "rest" and focus more attention on cellular maintenance and repair.
Can Re-Q Help Reset Aging Fibroblasts?
Early laboratory research on RLX-201 is especially interesting. Older human dermal fibroblasts treated with RLX-201 shifted toward the elongated, spindle-like shape associated with younger fibroblasts. Early findings have also included increased autophagy, reduced p21, and DNA methylation changes toward a more youthful epigenetic pattern.
This is why Re-Q represents a different approach to anti-aging skincare. Retinoids, Vitamin C, growth factors, exosomes, and many cosmetic procedures work in part by encouraging fibroblasts to produce collagen or extracellular matrix. Re-Q instead focuses on the health and responsiveness of the fibroblast itself.
The theory is compelling: a healthier, better-functioning fibroblast may ultimately be better prepared to respond to collagen-stimulating signals.
A New Approach to Skin Longevity
Re-Q and RLX-201 are part of an emerging field of skin longevity science focused on cellular senescence, autophagy, mTOR signaling, mitochondrial health, cellular repair, and the biological processes that cause skin cells to become less efficient with age.
The science is promising, but it is also new. RLX-201 should not yet be considered a proven senolytic or a proven way to reverse skin aging. More controlled human studies and peer-reviewed research are needed to determine how these cellular findings translate into long-term improvements in aging skin.
At Skin Type Solutions, we believe understanding the science behind anti-aging ingredients is just as important as choosing the product itself. Learn your Baumann Skin Type® for free to determine which anti-aging products and ingredients belong in your personalized skincare regimen.
