More about skin type ORNW
ORNW skin is Oily, Resistant, Non-Pigmented and Wrinkle-Prone. This is a great Baumann Skin Type to have because the skin can usually tolerate strong treatment products, is not prone to inflammation or sensitivity, and does not have an increased tendency toward hyperpigmentation. This means the skincare routine can concentrate heavily on preventing and treating skin aging.
ORNW skin should choose anti-aging products based on age, sun exposure and lifestyle. For example, someone who plays outdoor sports or has significant sun exposure should consider products containing DNA repair enzymes. ORNWs over age 50 may consider Re_Q Longevity Face Serum, which is designed to help aging skin cells function more like younger cells. Most ORNW skin types can also do well with an exosome product such as ( plated ) INTENSE Serum.
Retinoids are especially important for ORNW skin. Because the skin is Resistant, many ORNWs can begin with a low-strength retinoid every night rather than starting every third night as Sensitive skin types often need to do. Retinoid strength can then be increased as tolerated. The ability to use retinoids consistently is one of the advantages of this skin type.
Because ORNW skin is Oily, it already produces plenty of sebum, which acts as a natural occlusive and helps decrease water evaporation. Heavy, lipid-rich barrier-repair moisturizers designed for Dry skin are usually unnecessary and can make ORNW skin feel sticky or greasy or contribute to clogged pores. If additional hydration is needed, choose a lightweight, noncomedogenic moisturizer with humectants rather than a heavy cream.
A foaming cleanser is usually a good choice because it removes excess sebum and gives Oily skin the clean feeling it prefers. The routine should also include a lightweight, noncomedogenic daily sunscreen. Finding an SPF that does not feel greasy is particularly important because daily sun protection is one of the most effective ways to prevent additional skin aging.
ORNW skin does not need to spend valuable routine steps treating problems it does not have. It generally does not need skin lighteners, rich barrier-repair creams or soothing products for sensitivity. Instead, the routine can focus on the most effective anti-aging technologies for the person's age and sun exposure.
This is why knowing the complete Baumann Skin Type matters. ORNW skin can usually tolerate a more powerful and focused anti-aging routine than Sensitive skin types, while its Oily skin requires very different moisturizers and sunscreens than Dry Wrinkle-Prone skin types.
What are the best anti-aging serums for ORNW skin?
There is no single best anti-aging serum for every ORNW. The best choices depend on age, sun exposure, lifestyle and the answers to the lifestyle questions in the 16 Skin Type Quiz. Because ORNW skin is Resistant, it can usually tolerate a wide variety of anti-aging technologies, so the goal is to choose the ones that best match the individual causes of skin aging.
If there is significant sun exposure, such as frequent outdoor sports, consider a DNA repair enzyme serum along with an antioxidant serum. These help target the effects of accumulated environmental and UV exposure.
For ORNWs over age 50, Re-Q Longevity Face Serum can be considered to help aging skin cells function more like younger cells. Beginning around age 30, an exosome serum such as Plated INTENSE Serum is another anti-aging option. Growth factor serums can also be incorporated into an ORNW anti-aging routine.
For ORNWs under age 50 who want a dewy, plump, radiant complexion, a hyaluronic acid serum such as ALASTIN HA IMMERSE Serum is a good choice. It provides lightweight hydration without the heavy lipids that Oily skin does not need.
For older skin, a Heparan Sulfate Analog product such as Senté Dermal Repair Cream is another option. It provides lightweight hydration while supporting the appearance of aging skin without requiring a heavy barrier-repair cream.
Peptide serums can also be used. Some peptides can give the skin a temporary firmer appearance, but this cosmetic tightening effect does not replace longer-term anti-aging treatments such as retinoids.
Vitamin C serums are an excellent choice for ORNW skin, particularly because Resistant skin can usually tolerate the low pH required by L-ascorbic acid formulations. Vitamin C works especially well in a routine after a low-pH cleanser such as a salicylic acid cleanser.
The advantage of ORNW is that there are many anti-aging options. The goal is not to use all of them. Choose the anti-aging technologies that match age, sun exposure and lifestyle, and combine them with a retinoid and daily sunscreen.
What cleanser is best for ORNW skin?
ORNW skin does best with a cleanser that removes excess sebum without leaving additional oil on the skin. If you have clogged pores, blackheads or dull skin, choose a salicylic acid cleanser. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it can penetrate into sebum-filled pores while helping exfoliate dead skin cells that contribute to congestion and a dull surface.
If your pores are clear and your skin is not dull, use a foaming cleanser that effectively removes excess sebum, sunscreen and debris. ORNW skin is Resistant, so it generally tolerates foaming cleansers well.
Oil cleansers are usually not the best choice for oily ORNW skin because they can leave additional lipids on the skin when they are not completely removed. It is a myth that cleansing oily skin with oil teaches the skin to produce less sebum. Sebum production is primarily controlled by hormones, genetics and sebaceous gland activity, not by the amount of oil applied to the skin.
What is the best anti-aging ingredient for ORNW skin?
Retinoids are the most important anti-aging ingredient for ORNW skin. Retinoids such as retinol, retinaldehyde and prescription tretinoin increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen production and help improve fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture and clogged pores. They have some of the strongest evidence of any topical ingredients for treating photoaged skin.
ORNW skin is Resistant rather than Sensitive, so it can usually tolerate retinoids better than sensitive Baumann Skin Types and can progress to stronger retinoids more easily. Start with a lower-strength retinoid and gradually increase the strength as your skin adjusts.
Retinoids should be combined with daily sunscreen, because preventing additional UV damage is essential to any anti-aging routine. Depending on your age, sun exposure and lifestyle, other anti-aging ingredients such as antioxidants, vitamin C, exosomes, growth factors and DNA repair enzymes can be added to your ORNW routine.
How can ORNW skin improve large pores and rough skin texture?
Large, visible pores are common in ORNW skin because androgenic hormones stimulate sebaceous glands and increase sebum production. Higher sebum production is associated with more visible pores, and pores can look even larger when they become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells. Aging can also make pores more noticeable as the structural support around them decreases.
For ORNW skin with large pores or rough texture, use a salicylic acid (SA) peel pad or peel. Salicylic acid is lipophilic, or oil-soluble, which makes it particularly useful for oily skin. Unlike water-soluble AHAs, salicylic acid can penetrate into the lipid-rich environment of the pore, helping loosen and remove sebum and dead skin cells that contribute to clogged and enlarged-looking pores.
AHAs can be useful for surface exfoliation and improving rough texture, but salicylic acid is the better exfoliating acid when oily skin and clogged pores are the main concerns. Retinoids can also be added to the ORNW routine to improve skin texture and address signs of aging.
