More about skin type DRPT

DRPT skin is Dry, Resistant, Pigmented and Tight. DRPTs are under age 30 with minimal sun exposure, so skin aging is not yet a major concern. Their main skin problem is uneven pigmentation with dark spots. The skin may also feel dry and can look dull or lack the healthy glow and radiance seen in well-hydrated skin.

Because DRPT skin is Resistant, it is less likely to have problems with acne, rosacea, stinging, inflammation or skin allergies and can usually tolerate stronger treatment ingredients. Because it is Tight, anti-aging products are generally unnecessary at this stage.

The DRPT skincare routine should focus on fading dark spots, improving hydration and restoring radiance. Apply a skin-lightening serum directly to the dark spots, rather than unnecessarily treating the entire face. Follow with a barrier-repair moisturizer over the entire face to improve hydration and strengthen the dry skin barrier.

Gentle exfoliation can also help dry, dull DRPT skin look smoother and more radiant. Exfoliating once or twice a week is usually enough. Avoid over-exfoliating. Using exfoliating acids, scrubs or other exfoliating products too frequently can disrupt the skin barrier and cause irritation, which can work against your goal of achieving smooth, evenly pigmented skin.

DRPT is a good example of why the complete Baumann Skin Type matters when choosing skincare. This skin type does not need to fill the routine with soothing ingredients for sensitivity or anti-aging products for wrinkles. The routine can remain simple and concentrate on the problems DRPT skin actually has: dark spots, dryness and lack of radiance.

Should DRPT skin apply dark spot serums to the entire face or only to dark spots?

For DRPT skin, apply your skin-lightening serum directly to the dark spots, not the entire face. Be careful not to spread the product onto the surrounding normally pigmented skin. The goal is to lighten areas with excess pigment without unnecessarily lightening your normal skin.

Always apply sunscreen to the entire face every morning, not just the dark spots. Preventing UV and visible-light exposure is an important part of preventing existing spots from getting darker and reducing the development of new pigmentation.

Should I apply my dark spot serum before or after moisturizer?

Apply your dark spot serum before your moisturizer. Skin-lightening ingredients work best when applied directly to clean skin rather than on top of a moisturizer.

For DRPT skin, using a hydroxy acid cleanser before the dark spot serum can help remove excess dead skin cells and improve penetration of the ingredients applied afterward. Apply the dark spot treatment directly to the areas of uneven pigmentation, then apply your barrier-repair moisturizer over the entire face.

What is the best moisturizer for DRPT skin under age 30?

Young DRPT skin usually does not need an expensive moisturizer filled with anti-aging ingredients. You generally do not need to spend extra money on moisturizers containing snail mucin, exosomes, growth factors or other advanced anti-aging technologies when skin aging is not yet one of your primary concerns.

Instead, spend your skincare budget on what DRPT skin actually needs. Look for a barrier-repair moisturizer that concentrates on hydration and barrier repair, with humectants to attract and hold water, occlusive ingredients to reduce water evaporation, and barrier-repair lipids such as ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol. These ingredients can make dry skin look smoother, plumper and more radiant while strengthening the skin barrier.

Zerafite Barrier Repair Moisturizer is my favorite affordable barrier-repair moisturizer for young DRPT skin. Made in South Korea using advanced barrier-repair technology, it is designed to replace important skin lipids, reduce water loss and deeply hydrate dry skin without making you pay for anti-aging technologies your skin does not need yet.

Because DRPT skin is Pigmented, I also prefer moisturizers that do not contain potentially phototoxic or photosensitizing botanical ingredients that could work against your efforts to prevent uneven pigmentation.

How often should DRPT skin exfoliate?

DRPT skin often looks dull because dry skin can develop a buildup of dead skin cells on the surface. Exfoliating once or twice a week can make the skin feel smoother and look brighter and more radiant.

However, do not over-exfoliate. Using hydroxy acids, scrubs, exfoliating pads and other exfoliating products too frequently can disrupt the skin barrier and cause irritation. Irritation can also contribute to unwanted pigmentation.

For DRPT skin, one or two well-planned exfoliation days each week is usually enough. The rest of the routine should concentrate on barrier repair, targeted treatment of dark spots and daily sun protection.
