Skin Care Spotlight: Rationale

For its first 16 years, Rationale wasn’t available in a store. Instead, it existed only inside plastic surgery and dermatology clinics. That history shapes almost everything about how Rationale operates today, now that it is available in retail and has become one of Australia’s favorite skin care brands. In the US, Rationale has also been gaining traction as a go-to cosmeceutical brand for a wide range of skin concerns.

Before deciding whether it earns a spot in your routine, though, it's worth understanding where the brand came from and whether the research backs up its claims.

Rationale was founded in Melbourne in 1992 by cosmetic chemist Richard Parker, initially as a line restricted to plastic surgery and dermatology clinics. Rationale became available outside medical practices in 2008. They opened the first retail flagship store in 2010. 

However, Rationale’s products still stay true to their clinical-facing history that featured formulations developed alongside medical practitioners treating post-procedure and sun-damaged skin.

The brand's central premise is what it calls skin identical technology – formulating with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants that mirror what's already present in human skin, on the theory that skin absorbs and uses ingredients it recognizes more efficiently than synthetic additions. Rationale's manufacturing and research facility is based in Kyneton, in Victoria's Macedon Ranges, where the brand relocated its operations in 2016 to support in-house manufacturing and international growth.

Richard Parker's interest in skin care reportedly traces back to his own struggles with skin damage as a young competitive swimmer, which pushed him toward studying dermatology research rather than formal cosmetic chemistry at first. He became a qualified cosmetic chemist in 2005 and has continued to work directly with Australian dermatologists on the brand's formulations since.

Parker believes that sun damage, not chronological aging alone, is the primary driver of how skin looks over time. That's not a controversial claim in dermatology, but it is the organizing idea behind nearly every Rationale product: prevention and repair of environmental and solar damage takes priority over other categories of anti-aging marketing.

• The Essential Six system – a six-step regimen structured around resilience, vitality, brilliance, integrity, clarity, and renewal. Each number in the Essential Six corresponds to a function, not a single product, so multiple formulations exist under the same number to fit different skin types and textures.

• Skin identical formulations – active ingredients that mirror the vitamins, minerals, and proteins already present in the skin, instead of purely synthetic ingredients.

• A clinic-first reputation – decades of use inside Australian dermatology and cosmetic surgery practices before becoming consumer-facing.

• Local manufacturing – all formulation and production takes place at Rationale's own facility in Kyneton, Australia.

• A narrower ingredient list per product – Rationale tends to build simpler formulas around a small number of well-studied active ingredients.

Rationale's formulations lean on a relatively small, repeated set of active ingredients across the line. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, shows up throughout the Essential Six system. It's a PAR-2 blocker that helps to calm inflammation, support the skin's barrier, and interfere with the pigment-transfer process that drives uneven tone. Because niacinamide is water-soluble and generally well tolerated, it functions as a backbone ingredient across skin types in Rationale products.

For retinoid-sensitive skin, several night formulas substitute bakuchiol, a plant-derived compound extracted from Psoralea corylifolia seeds. Bakuchiol doesn't bind retinoic acid receptors the way true retinoids do, so it isn't technically a retinoid, but it has been shown to produce comparable improvements in fine lines and photodamage with fewer side effects (4).

Daytime Rationale formulas use zinc oxide as the primary broad-spectrum UV filter, alongside a mix of antioxidant vitamins and minerals to support the skin's own defense systems. The brand also includes DNA repair enzymes in its night formulations to help support the skin's existing repair processes.

• The Essential Six clinical trial – A 12-week study enrolled 30 participants with mild-to-moderate photoaging on the full Essential Six regimen and measured statistically significant improvements in radiance (43%), tactile roughness (48%), visual roughness (44%), firmness (32%), tone clarity (21%), and overall appearance (29%), with no significant change in deep wrinkles (5). The study was co-authored by Rationale's founder and funded by the company, so it should be read as brand-sponsored research rather than independent, third-party data, even though it appeared in a peer-reviewed dermatology journal.

• DNA repair and gene expression – Rationale has also published its own research on the DNA-repair claim behind its night formulas. A study measured both visible skin changes and gene expression markers after use of #6 The Night Crème, reporting improvements in inflammation, hydration, firmness, and radiance alongside upregulated markers associated with DNA repair activity (6). 

• Sun damage and skin aging – Rationale's main product philosophy is centered on the fact that UV exposure accounts for a large majority of visible facial aging in populations with lighter skin, with one widely cited study estimating that figure at around 80% (3). This isn't a brand-specific claim, but it explains why Rationale products focus so heavily on daytime protection rather than treatment-only active ingredients, especially being based in sunny Australia. 

• Bakuchiol versus retinol – The clinical case for bakuchiol as a retinol alternative comes primarily from a 2019 randomized, double-blind trial comparing 0.5% bakuchiol against 0.5% retinol over 12 weeks. Both groups saw comparable improvements in wrinkles and pigmentation, but the bakuchiol group reported significantly less scaling and stinging (4).

• Niacinamide and barrier function – The basis for niacinamide's role in barrier support traces back to older but frequently cited research showing that topical niacinamide increases the production of ceramides in the skin, which supports the skin's own ability to retain moisture and resist irritation (7).

The Essential Six trial is a single, company-funded study with a modest sample size of 30 participants and no independent replication to date, so its specific percentage improvements shouldn't be read as guaranteed outcomes for every user. As with the Essential Six trial, the DNA repair study was co-authored by Rationale's founder and funded by the company, so the conflict of interest applies here, too.  However, most companies do not take the time or incur the expense of such a trial so it is commendable that Rationale did these studies!

The bakuchiol-versus-retinol data is independently conducted but also comes from a single 12-week trial, which is a short window for judging long-term anti-aging performance.

Rationale tends to suit people with sun-damaged, pigmented, or early-aging skin who want a structured routine rather than an à la carte approach. The bakuchiol-based night formulas make the line a good choice for people with retinol-sensitive or sensitive skin types, and the ceramide-based cleanser suits dry skin types prone to barrier disruption.

Because of its emphasis on antioxidant and DNA-repair support, Rationale products are also frequently recommended for post-procedure skin recovering from in-clinic treatments. 

The biggest drawback to the Rationale line is the price point, especially considering the Essential Six system is designed to be used as a full regimen. That said, Rationale products can be used on their own outside of the six-step system. The most important factor is that the products you choose are a match for your skin type.

Rationale has earned its reputation in Australia from three decades of clinic use and a formulation philosophy that stays focused on sun damage and barrier support. While it's not necessarily the brand for someone chasing the newest peptide or trending ingredient, it can be a great option for those looking for a structured, science-grounded routine.
