How Can I Make My Retinol Work Better?

You can make your retinol work better by combining it with ingredients that increase absorption, improve exfoliation, and increase the responsiveness of aging skin cells. However, these strategies can also increase side effects such as dryness, peeling, redness, and irritation, so it is important to choose the right combination for your Baumann Skin Type. Hyaluronic acid (HA) increases hydration in the stratum corneum, which increase the penetration of topical retinoids. Apply your retinol before your moisturizer. The moisturizer creates an occlusive layer that increases retinoid penetration. Use with Re-Q Longevity Face Serum, which is designed to increase the responsiveness of aging skin cells to retinoid stimulation. Finally, a hydroxy acid cleanser containing acids such as glycolic acid removes accumulated dead surface cells and improves exfoliation, helping retinoids penetrate more effectively. For the best results, use these ingredients as part of a complete skin care routine customized to your Baumann Skin Type.

Can I Still Make Collagen After Age 60?

Yes! Your skin can still make new collagen after age 60, 70, and even 80. However, collagen production slows as you age because the cells that make collagen, called fibroblasts, become less active and do not respond as well to signals that tell them to make more collagen. Retinoids are among the most effective ingredients for stimulating collagen production in older skin. They activate receptors in skin cells called retinoic acid receptors (RARs), which turn on collagen production and help reduce the breakdown of existing collagen. In fact, studies have shown that topical vitamin A treatments can increase collagen production even in people over 80! Prescription retinoids such as tretinoin have the strongest scientific evidence, but high-strength retinol and retinaldehyde products available without a prescription can also improve signs of skin aging.
