Skin Care Spotlight: EltaMD

EltaMD is the most recommended professional sunscreen brand among US dermatologists, thanks to its tolerable formulas that work well for even sensitive skin types. EltaMD sunscreens are built around zinc oxide and are fragrance-free and noncomedogenic. The brand’s standout product, UV Clear SPF 46, goes a step further by pairing zinc oxide with 5% niacinamide, making it one of the few daily sunscreens that actively addresses redness, breakouts, and post-inflammatory pigmentation at the same time.

Here, we take a closer look at where the brand came from, how its key formulas are put together, what the research actually shows, and which skin types benefit most.

EltaMD's roots trace back to 19th-century Switzerland, where a healing ointment formulated for farmers eventually became the foundation for a line of professional wound care products. By 1988, that heritage had made its way to the United States in the form of Elta, a range of wound care products that became standard in hospitals, burn centers, and rehabilitation clinics. In 2007, the company extended that medical foundation into everyday skin care and rebranded as EltaMD.

EltaMD was originally developed by the company Swiss American CDMO before its acquisition by Colgate-Palmolive. 

Today, the brand is best known for its sunscreen lineup, which covers everything from lightweight daily-wear formulas to water-resistant sport options and tinted mineral SPFs. Beyond sun care, EltaMD also offers cleansers, moisturizers, and recovery-focused products. All of its products are fragrance-free, paraben-free, and noncomedogenic and are designed to work across a wide range of skin types and conditions.

• Zinc oxide is a physical (mineral) UV filter that works by sitting on top of the skin and reflecting UV radiation rather than absorbing it. It is the only single sunscreen ingredient that covers the full UV spectrum from 240 to 400 nm, including both UVA1 and UVA2, which are the longer wavelengths associated with photoaging and pigmentation [3]. EltaMD uses micronized zinc oxide in transparent formulations, which addresses the traditional complaint that mineral sunscreens leave a white cast. Not all of their sunscreens are 100% mineral, however. Some formulas combine zinc oxide with octinoxate to achieve specific textures and SPF values.

• Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is included in several EltaMD sunscreens. A study in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy found that 2% topical niacinamide significantly reduced facial sebum excretion rates [4]. At the higher 5% concentration found in EltaMD UV Clear, niacinamide also inhibits melanosome transfer between melanocytes and keratinocytes — the mechanism by which pigment spreads — and also showed anti-inflammatory effects in both acne- and rosacea-prone skin [5].

• Hyaluronic acid is included in several EltaMD formulas to maintain skin hydration during sun exposure. Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide naturally found in the skin that can bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

• Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant that can provide added protection against oxidative stress caused by sun exposure. 

• Zinc-AOX Pro Technology – Newer EltaMD formulas feature what the brand calls Zinc-AOX Pro Technology, which pairs zinc oxide UV filtration with antioxidant protection. This is intended to address the growing concern about high-energy visible (HEV) light and environmental pollutants, which contribute to oxidative damage. 

A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that zinc oxide-based sunscreens provide significantly higher UVA protection factors compared to other mineral sunscreen formulations in both in vitro and in vivo testing [3]. Zinc oxide's 240–400 nm coverage range is broader than titanium dioxide, which is why it is considered the gold standard single mineral filter for true broad-spectrum protection [6].

A controlled study published in Dermatology found that 4% topical niacinamide performed comparably to 4% hydroquinone for facial hyperpigmentation, with better tolerability [5]. Separate research published in Archives of Dermatological Research demonstrated niacinamide's unique mechanism for inhibiting melanosome transfer between melanocytes and surrounding cells [7].

EltaMD conducted a 12-week clinical study of its newer UV Clear Blemish-Prone and Oil Balancing SPF 50 formula in people with acne-prone and oily skin. Participants showed improvement in comedone size and appearance (50.5%), global acne assessment (51.2%), post-inflammatory redness (69.8%), and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (78.7%) [8]. These results are notable, but the study was brand-funded and was not published in a peer-reviewed journal at the time of this writing.

Most of the published research supporting EltaMD's formulations comes from studies on individual ingredients, rather than on EltaMD products specifically. The 12-week acne study has a clear conflict of interest given brand funding.

One of the main benefits of EltaMD's sunscreen line is that it is suitable for most Baumann Skin Types. Oily and acne-prone skin types benefit most from UV Clear, given the niacinamide content and the lightweight, noncomedogenic formula. Sensitive skin types, including those with rosacea subtypes, tend to do well with EltaMD SPFs, given the consistent absence of fragrance and common irritants. Dry skin types often do well with the UV Physical Tinted or UV Lotion, which have more emollient finishes than UV Clear.

For post-procedure skin, EltaMD's simple ingredient profiles and zinc oxide-based formulas make them a frequent recommendation from dermatologists, as the skin barrier is compromised and tolerance for harsh ingredients is reduced.

A couple of small things are worth noting. UV Clear SPF 46, EltaMD's most popular formula, is not a 100% mineral sunscreen, as it contains octinoxate along with zinc oxide. While EltaMD does offer 100% mineral options, UV Clear is not one of them.

EltaMD is also pricier than many drugstore options, though people who have a difficult time finding a sunscreen that feels good on their skin may find that the price is worth it for a product that works with their skin.
