Hi! I am board certified Dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann MD, FAAD. I am a skin care expert who literally wrote the books on skin care science. I am a board certified dermatologist and skin care specialist who has devoted my research over the last 25 years to skin types, skin care products, cosmeceutical ingredients, and creating the best custom skin care routines for your skin type.
I also developed the skincare routine quiz and 16 Baumann Skin Types System used by dermatologists and found in many medical textbooks. You can find the skin type quiz that doctors use at the link below.

To find the best blogs on skin care or skin care ingredients by a skin care expert- you can find my entire library of dermatologist advice on skincare here at this library link.
I have written 3 bestselling books on skin care and skin care ingredients.
In 2002, I published the first and bestselling textbook on Cosmetic Dermatology (McGraw Hill 2002, 2009, 2022). It is now on it's 3rd edition and in many languages.
For over 25 years I have written a monthly column on cometic ingredients called Cosmeceutical Critique for a dermatology publicationcalled Dermatology News.
These columns were published in another textbook used by dermatologists and aestheticians called Cosmeceuticals and Cosmetic Ingredients. It discusses the research data on various skin care ingredients. The simplified version of that skin care ingredient book can be found in our skin care ingredient library.
In 2023, I write current blogs online to find Skin Care Tips:
Looking for skin care blogs by a dermatologist?
I have written many blogs in my career. This is where to find the best skin care blogs in 2023:
I have written many popular blogs in the past. You may have seen my Yahoo blog for Yahoo Health called The Skin Guru that was popular in 2006-2011. We had millions of readers until yahoo health changed their format and stopped using experts to write their blogs.
Over the last 15 years, I have studied skin types by gathering data in dermatologist's offices worldwide. I tested skin care products on the 16 Baumann Skin Types to see which brands, products, ingredients, and combinations of products were best for each skin type.
In 2014 I developed over 40,000 skin care routines. From 2014-2021 I tested the custom skin routines on dermatology patients worldwide. I have worked with dermatologist physicians around the world to test these prescription skin care regimens on all genders, ethnicities and in different geographic locations. We developed software to match a skin care routine to skin concerns, and then further personalize and customize them based on skin concerns, skin care brand preferences, lifestyle habits, values, and budget.
I have trained over 200 medical providers to use the Skin Type Solutions System in their medical practices. These dermatologists, doctors, and medical aestheticians helped test these dermatologist-developed personalized custom skin care routines on over 100,000 patients.
I have performed research trials for many skin care companies and pharmaceutical companies, and have devoted the last two decades to studying skin type. If you click the preceding link, you can see my research publications.
I began studying the genetics of skin types at the University of Miami in 2008. Our first skin genome research trials looked at gene expression in oily skin vs dry skin.
Our results helped us validate the Baumann Skin Type Quiz so you can easily find out if you have oily or dry skin without doing skin genome testing.
In 2006, I was on Good Morning American to launch my book The Skin Type Solution that became a NY Times Bestselling Book on skin care.
In 2010, I did a PBS special on skin care for different skin types called The Skin Type Solution. In this show we made custom skin care routines for 5 women and followed them over several weeks to see their skin improve.
In 2006 - around 2010 I ran a huge skin care forum at skintypesolutions.com where you could discuss skin care products with others that have the same Baumann Skin Type as you.
Now I write a twice monthly skin care article for the Miami Herald Newspaper and a monthly article for Dermatology News called Cosmeceutical Critique.
If you are looking for the best skincare advice from a dermatologist on You Tube, I have many playlists designed to teach you everything you need to know about skincare in 2024. You can find my playlists of skincare videos on the SkinTypeSolutions You Tube Channel.
I DO NOT have a skin care line called Dr. Baumann Skincare. There is a Theodore Baumann- a chemist from Germany- who has the last name Baumann and he has a skin care line. I have asked him to please use his first name Theodore to avoid confusion, but he has refused. I will always use the name “Leslie Baumann MD” so you will know it is me.
To make it even more confusing, there is another Leslie Baumann who is a dermatologist. I am the one who was a Professor at the University of Miami for 13 years, wrote the books mentioned above, developed and researched the Baumann Skin Typing System, and who lives in Miami Beach.
