The Research
Long have we studied the profound interaction between human skin and sunlight, and the extent to which our skin can protect itself from solar and environmental stressors.
Epigenetic influences, including sun exposure and pollution, diminish the skin’s native protective reserves of Melanin, Vitamin D and Heat Shock Proteins, which form a first-line defense against UV, Visible Light and Infrared Radiation. The result is dull, dehydrated skin prone to inflammation and premature ageing.
For more than 30 years, RATIONALE Research has focused on identifying, optimizing and deploying these Skin Identical vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and proteins in our Environmental Protection Formulations.
Melanin, a Skin Identical antioxidant, naturally protects epidermal keratinocytes by forming a protective cap over DNA that defends against UV light. When applied topically, Melanin acts as a natural sunscreen booster that enhances protection against the entire Solar Constant. In addition, Vitamin D precursors––which are found in the plasma membranes of skin cells—are stimulated with exposure to sunlight and synthesize active Vitamin D, which has photo-protective effects, decreasing DNA damage and oxidative stress while reducing inflammation. Similarly, Heat Shock Proteins are able to shield skin cells from thermal damage by expanding and unfolding in the presence of heat to protect cells from becoming dry and dehydrated.
