Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) is a North American plant traditionally used in herbal medicine. Its root extract is included in skincare for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties and is often marketed as a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy due to its supposed phytoestrogen content. However, its estrogenic effects are controversial, as diosgenin, a component of wild yam, can be converted into steroid hormones in a labs setting but not in the skin. Regardless, if you are pregnant or have hyperpigmentation like melasma, you may want to avoid using this ingredient.
