Aging Skin: The Wrinkle-Prone Skin Type

Is your skin aging or at risk for premature aging?

In the Baumann Skin Typing system, the aging skin type is called “Wrinkle-Prone” skin. This skin type may have premature aging such as skin thinning, fine lines, sagging and loss of elasticity, and fragility. What age you start looking old depends on many factors that speed aging which we will discuss in this Aging Skin blog.

If you took our skin aging quiz and found out you are a Wrinkle-Prone Baumann Skin Type, we can help you take steps to protect your skin from aging too soon. If you took the quiz already, you can find your dermatologist- recommended skin aging regimen here.

It is not unusual to see the first signs of skin aging in your 20's if you have had a lot of stress, illness, or sun or pollution exposure.

Is your skin at risk of premature aging?

Aging Skin Types

Eight of the 16 Baumann Skin Types have premature aging or age appropriate aging changes and need antiaging skin care products. Each of these aging skin types is either over 30 years of age and/or has lifestyle habits that speed skin aging.

If you are an Aging Skin Type, you can shop using your Baumann Skin Type Number to build a skin care routine that targets skin aging and other barriers to healthy skin.

5 Types of Skin Aging

When you look at the biology of skin aging, there are 5 types of skin aging.

  1. Intrinsic Aging
  2. Extrinsic aging
  3. Hormonal Aging
  4. Catabolic Aging
  5. Aging due to Lifestyle Habits

You may not be able to control many of these, but you can have some influence on extrinsic aging and lifestyle habits.

Lifestyle habits that age skin pre-maturely

Lifestyle Habits That Age Skin Prematurely

These habits increase skin aging by activating chemical pathways that cause skin aging:

  • Eat a lot of sugar
  • Pollution exposure
  • Poor diet
  • Poor sleep habits
  •  Smoking and vaping
  •  Stress
  • Sun exposure
  • Tanning bed use

If you have these risk factors, you should start using products with antiaging ingredients now!

We will help you find products right for you from the best medical grade skin care brands.

Skin Care For An Aging Face

Why Should I Start Using Products To Treat Aging Skin?

Antiaging skin care products can prevent skin aging when started early. The sooner you begin anti-aging skincare products, the more wrinkles you will prevent.

Of course- antiaging skincare involves much more than skincare products. Healthy lifestyle habits help prevent premature aging of the skin.

When To Begin Anti-Aging Skin Care?

Antiaging skincare should begin at age 30.

Some people should begin antiaging skin care in their teens or twenties if they have lifestyle habits that speed skin aging.

Take the skin aging quiz to find out your Baumann Skin Type and see if you need antiaging skin products -even if you are younger than 30 years of age.

If you are a skin type prone to premature aging, we will help you find the best antiaging ingredients for your Baumann Skin Type.

Best Skincare Ingredients for Aging Skin

There are many ingredients to treat aging skin.

Some of these prevent aging and some treat symptoms of aging.

You can prevent these signs of aging skin:

  • loss of elasticity
  • sagging
  • skin thinning
  • wrinkles

You can reverse premature aging by getting on skin care to treat these issues:

Which type of antiaging ingredient to treat symptoms of aging skin depends upon many different factors such as causes of your skin aging, skin type, habits, and which symptoms of aging your skin has.

You can find a list of ingredients in skin care products to treat aging skin here.

Anti Aging Skin Care Routine

The best antiaging skin care routine should contain ingredients that prevent skin aging. These ingredients may include antioxidants, exosomes, retinoids, growth factors, heparan sulfate, defensins, peptides and other ingredients to slow skin aging.

The best antiaging ingredients to use for your aging skin depends upon your Baumann Skin Type.

Your skin care should target all the causes of aging skin and your underlying barriers to skin health

The order that you apply the products in your skin care regimen is also important. We can help you get the right  skincare routine step order. The order that antiaging skincare products are applied determines how well they work, so follow your dermatologist-recommended antiaging skincare routine exactly as prescribed.

Products for Aging Skin

Antiaging skin care is important to help prevent aging skin. If you have a lot of sun exposure or poor lifestyle habits that speed skin aging, you need antiaging skin care ingredients that block the causes of aging skin such as cellular senescence.

The best antiaging skincare products and skin care routine depends upon your Baumann Skin Type® and which skin conditions and barriers to skin health you have that are causing your skin to age prematurely. Using the wrong antiaging skin care is not only a waste of time and money but can also affect your skin’s health and speed skin aging.

It is best to know your Baumann Skin Type before buying antiaging skincare products because these products are expensive and can be harmful if not used properly.

You can easily shop by your skin type-look for your skin type octagon.

Reverse Premature Skin Aging

It is never too late to begin antiaging skin care.  These products can reverse premature aging if used properly.

Of course you also need a daily sunscreen to prevent more skin damage.

Can you reverse premature skin aging?

Best Anti-Aging Cream To Reverse Aging

There are many products that claim to be the best antiaging cream. However- ask any dermatologist what are the best antiaging products and they will all tell you the same thing:

  1. Sunscreen
  2. Retinoids
  3. Vitamin C

We do not always think of sunscreen as an antiaging skin care product- but it is the best way to prevent skin aging. Daily use of even a low-level sunscreen of SPF4-10 used every day was shown to reduce lifetime exposure to the sun by 50%! (14)

The best sunscreen for antiaging is the one that you will wear every day- so choose  a sunscreen that you like the feel of. We recommend using a SPF every day. Do not depend on a facial foundation or powder with SPF.  They are not as effective.

Retinoids are a must! You can read more about how they treat wrinkles here.

The newest and most exciting antiaging ingredient is exosomes.

Retinol

Retinol To Treat Aging Skin

The second best antiaging ingredient is a retinoid. Retinol is in the retinoid family but it is not FDA approved to treat aging skin. Interestingly, the prescription strength retinoids like tretinoin that are FDA approved turn into retinol in the skin.

Retinoids are Vitamin A derivatives that are considered the gold standard in evidence-based skincare antiaging products.

Here are our favorite retinol products for beginners:

Retinol is the most common and most effective form of retinoid in cosmeceuticals and medical-grade antiaging skincare. Avoid using antiaging retinol products that contain large amounts of retinyl palmitate and retinyl linoleate. These retinoid esters are not effective because they do not penetrate well into the skin. Instead, choose products with retinol.

There are many anti-aging retinol products on the market- and the best retinoid for antiaging depends upon your Baumann Skin Type. This is because there are many different formulations and strengths of retinoids. Packaging really matters when it comes to retinol antiaging products. Only choose antiaging retinol products in an airless pump or an aluminum tube and remember to always screw the lid back on to avoid retinol losing its potency.

Antiaging skin care is important to prevent and treat prematurely aging skin.

To make sure you are using the best antiaging skin care products, know your Baumann Skin Type and follow the dermatologist-recommended customized skincare routine for your skin type.
