Pregnancy Safe Melasma Treatments

These skin lightening serums, peels and masks do not contain ingredients that should not be used during in pregnancy. Melasma is so common during pregnancy that we wanted to put together a list of safe melasma treatments for our melasma patients. These work best as part of a complete custom skin care routine and with avoidance of sun and heat. Remember- do not use retinol and hydroquinone when you are pregnant and discuss any new supplements and treatment products with your doctor.

Why avoid licorice extract when pregnant?

Licorice extract (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a popular ingredient in skincare due to its skin-lightening and anti-inflammatory properties, primarily attributed to its active component, glabridin. However, glabridin should not be used during pregnancy because it has been shown to cause potential neurocognitive effects on the fetus, such as delays in cognition and development. While some forms of licorice extract do not contain glabridin, these alternatives are generally less effective at lightening the skin. This is because glabridin specifically inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production, thereby reducing pigmentation more effectively. It is advisable to avoid Glycyrrhiza glabra extract during pregnancy, especially in high concentrations, due to these potential risks. However, if Glycyrrhiza glabra extract appears at the end of the ingredient list and is used sparingly on small areas of the face, the concern is lessened.

Vitamin C is a wonderful ingredient to use in pregnancy.

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is an excellent ingredient to use for treating melasma during pregnancy due to its powerful antioxidant properties and safety profile. As an effective tyrosinase inhibitor, Vitamin C helps reduce melanin production, which is responsible for dark spots and uneven skin tone. Additionally, it promotes collagen synthesis, enhancing skin elasticity and overall texture. Vitamin C also provides protection against environmental stressors like UV radiation and pollution, which can exacerbate melasma. Its ability to brighten the skin and reduce hyperpigmentation makes it particularly beneficial for pregnant women, as it addresses skin concerns without posing any risks to the developing fetus. Vitamin C is water-soluble and minimally absorbed into the bloodstream, ensuring both efficacy and safety during pregnancy.

Why you must wear SPF when pregnant!

Using a tinted mineral sunscreen is crucial for boosting melasma treatment, especially during pregnancy. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provide broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. The tint in these sunscreens, often containing iron oxides, is vital for blocking blue light.

Blue light from the sun and digital devices can penetrate deeply and worsen melasma by increasing melanin production. Iron oxides in tinted sunscreens effectively block blue light, reducing its impact on the skin. This added protection enhances the effectiveness of melasma treatments by preventing further pigmentation, making it ideal for pregnant women managing melasma.
