Is Hyaluronic Acid Safe in Pregnancy

Pregnant woman wondering if Hyaluronic acid serum is safe

During pregnancy, you want to make sure that everything you put on your skin and in your body is safe. Is hyaluronic acid safe in pregnancy?

Hyaluronic acid, also called HA, is found in serums, face creams, lotions and there are even sunscreens with HA.

It is one of the most popular skin care ingredients.  It is also found in dermal fillers.

Should you avoid hyaluronic acid serums and creams when you are pregnant?  No need to avoid- they are safe.

Can I use hyaluronic acid when I am pregnant?

Is hyaluronic acid in skin care dangerous in pregnancy?

You can use hyaluronic acid in skin care products when you are pregnant. Hyaluronic acid in serums and face creams is not dangerous when you are pregnant.

Hyaluronic acid serums are used to hydrate skin, give it a glow and erase tiny lines and wrinkles.

The effects are temporary, so these serums may not be the best use of your money.

Is hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers dangerous in pregnancy?

You should not get dermal fillers when you are pregnant because of lidocaine and other additives in the dermal filler- not because of the HA.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid, also called hyaluronan,  is a glycosaminoglycan.

HA is naturally occurring and you have it in your own body. It is naturally broken down by an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

Initially hyaluronan in skin care products and dermal fillers was derived from rooster coombs, but now the hyaluronic acid products are made from bacterial fermentation in a laboratory setting.

Hyaluronic acid is an antiaging ingredient, but it is not one of the best.  The best is retinol- but it is best not to use retinol during pregnancy.

You may need a completely different skin care routine when you are pregnant.

Take the quiz (retake it if you already took it in the past) and find out what products are safe and correct for your skin type during your pregnancy.
