I am looking for a good organic skin care line that does not do animal testing. I cannot find any good effective ones. Do any of you have suggestions?

Is your water drying your skin?

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Hard water has calcium that can dry your skin. They now have water purifiers that can take these drying components out of the skin. The link to a great article on this is

http://www.kbbonline.com/kbb/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003843954

I am sorry- I cant figure out how to hyperlink it here so i will put the link under the dry skin forum and the discussion of the blog section.

Please let me know- have you used these? Which brands do you like? How much do they cost? Share with all of us!

New Help for Acne Sufferers

Friday, September 5th, 2008

I found two great new products.
If you have dry skin and acne- try the new MOISTURIZING product called Acneworx (available without a prescription). It is the only SA I know of that is non drying. Soon it will be at Duane Read but in the meantime call my office to purchase at 305-532-5552. Its $20. I hope to have it on Baumannstore soon.

If you have oily skin and acne- check out the new double sided pads by Quinnova called “Cleanse and Treat”. They are great for travel, for teenagers to put in school back packs or for your purse. One side of the pad has benzoyl peroxide ad the other has SA. This product requires a prescription.
It looks like the compnaies are realizing that we need more choices for acne. If you try these products- please let me know what you think!
Have a great day!

Catching up

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Hi Everyone!
What a crazy couple of months. I finished the edits of my new textbook “Cosmetic Dermatology” that comes out in Dec. I took my kids to Yellowstone (It is a must see if you have not been there!) and I hired many new people in my office to get ready for some big research projects we are beginning on skin type and genetics.
I have news- and you are the first to hear it. As of Wed, the University of Miami has decided to move forward with a trailblazing idea that I am so excited about. The University officially created the
“University of Miami Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute.”
I have been asked to direct it- yea! We will combine cosmetic dermatology, aesthetic plastic surgery, facial plastic surgery and oculoplastic surgery and nutrition under one roof. Our goal is to work together to begin research into the genetics of skin type and stem cells and their role in skin type. It is a huge initiative that has kept me so busy this summer. I will tell you more about our ground breaking research when I am able to share details. If anyone wants to contribute to this research- which should benefit us all – please go to www.derm.net/give. Your donation will go to the newly created institute at UM. If everyone who reads this donates $10- we will have our first million dollars to move ahead. It is crucial that we stay independent of companies so that we can remain unbiased. Your donations are GREATLY appreciated!
I will try harder to blog more often in between seeing patients, running the new institute and launching these revolutionary research trials. In the meantime- I have 3 other dermatologists blogging now. I hope that all of your questions are beign answered. Thanks again for your support!

Do you live in Indiana?

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I will be shooting a PBS special in Indiana in July. If you live in Indianapolis or Muncie, Indiana and want to be a patient on the show, please email my assistant at Lisa@metabeauty.com. We need someone who is 40+ years old and has some skin aging due to sun exposure of cigarettes. I would love to meet you!
The docs have their blogs up now. Yea! Progress! You should have received the sunscreen newsletter this week. Have a great weekend!

Lip gloss and skin cancer

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

You will see my blog on this at www.skinguru.com today. I wanted to share my thoughts as they only give me 250 words on Yahoo. The lips are the most common site of skin cancer. This occurs because most people forget to use sunscreen on the lips. (and it takes bad in many cases!) In addition, the lips do not have sebaceous glands so they do not make sebum which has vitamin E. Vitamin E is protective against cancer. If you have a rough scaled area on the lips that does not heal you need to get it biopsied. It is likely an early SCC (Squamous cell carcinoma).
We do not really know if SPF free lip gloss leads to skin cancer because no well designed studies have not been done. The main point here is that you need SPF protection for your lips too. Please comment on your favorite lip protecting products.
I like the lip kisses by Laura Mercier or the lip balm found here which I wear under my lip stick. http://www.lauramercier.com/products/colour/lips/lip_treatment/lip_balm/
What favorites do you have?
Have a great day!

In response to question about Heliocare…. It is composed of a fern extract that has been shown to reduce redness (and probably damage) from sun exposure. You can find it by asking your pharmacist. It is behind the counter which means that you can get without a prescription but you have to ask the pharmacist. I know that CVS and Walgreens has it. I take 2 pills one hour prior to golf, tennis or any prolonged outdoor exposure.
Here is the link…

and here is an article I wrote on the science…
