Hi Dr. Sachdev, could you please write about how skin of color ages differently according to skin tone? And how sun damage affects skin of color differently than European skin?
Thanks!

Hi
there are numerous products available on the indian market- what would be advisable is to log on to the site and find out your skin type based on the skin type solutions questionnaire.
I could then advise you as to what products would work for your skin based on those available in India
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi
the advantage with skin of colour is that it ages slower as compared to Caucasian skin as the pigment is protective.
So you will find that a darker skin person will have less wrinkles than a person with Caucasian skin of the same age.
Of course there are many contributing factors to aging namely occupation, sun exposure and smoking to name a few.
Since the pigment is proctective, the sun damage is also less in a person with skin of colour.
The risks of skin cancer are also less in darker skin types but nevertheless they do occur and regardless of the skin type, it is always advisable to use a broad spectrum sunscreen.

Thanks for the reply Dr. Sachdev. I was wondering if you could explain more about the factors contributing to wrinkling because I have known people with quite brown skin whose faces were completely wrinkled. I know that one was a smoker and had a hard life. It also seems to me that part of the reason skin of color ages better is because darker skinned people don’t ever try to tan and often try to avoid the sun so their skin will be as light as possible. What are your thoughts based on the patients you see in India?

Hi,
Hope you are well. Please help me with my skincare regimen. Here goes!
I am 39 .5 yrs. , Indian and olive skinned with black hair. I am d=20.5 s=42 p=35.5 and t=35.
I have some acne sometimes from avobenzone and chemical sunscreens and coconut oil and sensitizing ingredients that Dr. Baumann wrote in her book.
I use Dove cleanser am/pm
Vichy water sprayed on my face am/pm
B.Kamins skin lightening treatment on pigmentation (pm) until they fade, then after that course of treatment will discontinue the lightener and start Cellex-C sensitive Skin Vitamin C serum in the am.
Olay Total Effects 7x Ant-Ageing Complex am/pm
Eucerin Sensitive Skin spf 30 That’s sold in Baumann Store for dspws in am
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti Wrinkle Retinol Treatment every couple of days.
Is this regimen right?
Also when I start the Vitamin C serum around Fall , how should I apply it. First cleanser, serum, wait 3 minutes, then spray Vichy water and follow with Olay 7x and spf 30?
OR is it cleanser, spray Vichy water, wait until it is damp, then Vitamin C serum, wait 3 minutes, Olay 7x, then spf 30?
Also I like to know if you can recommend some bodycare products. I use Dove soap- is that good? and Dove body wash and St.Ives Oatmeal and Shea body lotion but would like some options in case the lotion is discontinued. I like body oils a lot too as they are easy and quick- can you recommend some?
Thanks for your help. I am looking forward to your work on this blog.
Best Regards,
Smita

Well generally darker skins will not be as wrinkled and as you have mentioned, the skins you have seen would be of people with excessive outdoor exposure, possibly smokers and those who never use sunscreens
Based on the patients I see, the aging changes are definitely less compared to Caucasian skin types.

HI Smita,
Based on what you have mentioned, the produts you are using are fine.
If you spray the Vichy water and then apply the serum, the absorption will be better on a damp skin and thus more effective and this would be my recommendation.
Dove is excellent- there is a lovely body moisturising oil from Thallion- if you need details- let me know depending where you are based.
Hope this helps

Hi Mukta,
Thanks for your advice. Now I have a regimen I know works. But I am getting some acne and I feel it is because I switched to the fragrance-free Olay Total EFfects, from the regular Olay Total Effects which is lighter. Maybe it is better in the winter when my skin is drier. But in the Skin Solutions book it wasn’t specifically mentioned to use the fragrance-free one so maybe that’s why I am breaking out.
I live in Quebec, Canada and would like more information on the Thallion body oil.
Also- is Dove body lotion excellent? That’s what you were referring to? Or the Dove soap is also excellent? Or you meant the Dove line is excellent? I heard that the Dove body lotion was good and was considering it as an alternative.
Thanks alot and take care,
Smita

Hi Dr. Mukta,
I would like to add also : I saw the Thalgo satinizing dry oil spray and was wondering if that was what you were refering to for dspts with a tendency to acne from sensitizing ingredients. As you know, I am on the search for a good body oil and came back from India this February with Keokarpin regular formula.. I really like it but don’t know what you think about it. I am thinking of buying it again if I see it. Is it recommended by dermatologists , such as yourself in India?
Thanks for the info.
Have a nice day.
Take care,
Smita

Hi Dr. Mukta,
I had an insect bite near my thigh two months back. I dont know which insect was that. First i thought it may be ant’s bite. But small blisters started coming near that area with so much of itching. I consulted a dermatologist and used Flucort-C cream. and Venusia cream as moisturiser. Now still it is uncontrolled and it has become aggressive. I badly want to consult and take treatment. I cannot control my hands from pricking and especially during night times, itching is more. I have taken appointment in Manipal for Wednesday. Can I consult you at your clinic earlier than that? Please help me.
Thanks

Hi there ! When I was young, my mom used to use a stone while bathing to remove the sticky dirts from the body. I used it for sometime until I started to get red marks. That was probably due to too much rubbing. Over the years, my skin have changed to dark one esp under the arms, nape and all around the thighs making it unbearably embarrassing for me to wear shorts and sleeveless tops. Is there any skin ointments that I can used to remove those dark stains? Please please suggest.

Dear RCS,
Laser hair removal is done on the face and neck- I have been using a long pulsed ND YAg laser for more than 10 years now .
No side effects- approx 8 to 12 sittings , one per month on average depending on the growth.
Approx cost mayu vary from 3000 INR to 5000 INR for the face.
Thanks
Mukta

thank you dr. sachdev,
is it true that for as long as the laser hair removal treatment goes on, one has to let the hair grow (cannot do threading etc for temporary removal ?) . so in this case if i go in for hair removal from face and neck - i cannot thread the hair for a year ?

Hi,
I was wondering why you haven’t replied.
I posted a question on September 9 but you didn’t get back to me. You never sent me the info on the body oil or told me the details about it, (like you said) nor told me whether Keokarpin body oil was suitable as well like I asked.
Is there any reason?
Best regards,
Smita
